Tests show that as many as 93% can use Loopeli. Of course, there are individuals who, due to physical and cognitive challenges, may not be able to start the service on their own. However, having a staff member assist with initiating the conversation can help a lot.
For businesses, we offer a demonstration package. This is designed for individuals who are unsure, allowing them to test the service for a limited period.
Once the user returns the package, Loopeli clears the user data, and then the package is ready to be used by a new user.
Yes, our process is based on the care homes offering Loopeli exclusively to its residents and their relatives. From there, Loopeli takes over everything. This means that the care home does not have access to any data, which means that Loopeli is not a data processor.
Loopeli handles everything! The care homes only needs to show/demonstrate that you offer the service, and after that, we take over the communication with the relatives. We ensure that everyone who should be invited is included, and we also manage the ongoing administration, such as inviting more members or changing radio stations.

Windlesham Manor: Enhancing Care through Improved Communication. Windlesham Manor is a small private residence that accommodates 37 residents, each with unique care needs. The manager, originally from Sweden, brings many years of experience in elderly care from both Sweden and England.
He believes that England faces similar challenges to those in Sweden, particularly the lack of simple technology that enables vulnerable groups to communicate with their families. After attending one of Loopeli’s webinars in the spring of 2024, he reached out to Loopeli and decided to trial the service at Windlesham Manor.
One resident, Mr. Colin Wilson, lives with Parkinson’s disease, which has significantly impacted his daily life. Recently, he has found it increasingly difficult to use his phone due to dexterity issues and cognitive impairment. Consequently, he often relied on staff for reassurance and to discuss his concerns, as he felt he was losing control of his life and worried about his family.
When Loopeli was introduced, Mr. Wilson experienced an immediate change. The staff became concerned when they noticed he was spending less time seeking their reassurance. With Loopeli, he gained control over his communication with his family, allowing him to connect independently. As a result, he now spends more time in his room talking to his children, especially his son in Canada, whom he had not seen for a long time.
A lower need for sedative medication
Mr. Wilson’s well-being and self-confidence have noticeably improved. He is now less worried and anxious, which has led to a reduced need for sedative medication. While medication plays an important role, it often comes with side effects. Reducing sedative use has boosted Mr. Wilson’s energy and overall well-being, and it’s wonderful to see such positive changes in a short time.
We are now considering a broader introduction of Loopeli at our facility. The benefits we’ve observed extend beyond our residents; their relatives also appreciate being able to supplement their in-person visits with video calls. Families have shared that they feel safer and less stressed knowing their loved ones can easily reach them via video. During calls, relatives can show their parents where they are and what they’re doing, allowing them to participate in activities and outings from afar. This connection brings joy not only to the residents but also to their families.
Additionally, we’ve noticed a positive impact on our care staff. Happier residents and improved communication with their families allow staff to focus on other essential tasks. By offering Loopeli, we believe we can significantly enhance the quality of care at our facility.
Loopeli has been tested at a nursing home in Örebro with the support of the Innomera research hub in Sweden. described below is the need and purpose of this test, as well as the results and lessons learned. You can also read about reflections from relatives and staff before and after using Loopeli.
Major Concerns About Communication
The need for improved communication was highlighted by a family with a relative who had recently moved into a nursing home in Örebro. They reached out to the company’s occupational therapist, prompting management to initiate a limited test of a potential solution.
Prior to this trial, several issues and challenges were identified, particularly regarding everyday communication between relatives and residents. Families reported that conversations were often brief and that they struggled to talk freely with their loved ones in the home. Additionally, relatives frequently encountered difficulties reaching their family members when they wished to, as the department phone was often busy.
There were also concerns that staff members handling calls sometimes misinterpreted conversations, making it hard for families to connect intimately or engage in open discussions. This lack of effective communication has generated anxiety among both residents and their relatives. The absence of regular contact with family can lead to heightened feelings of loneliness and a sense of exclusion.
Facts About Testing and Implementation
The testing phase for Loopeli began in June 2023 and continued through the autumn, wrapping up at the end of the year. The evaluation process involved in-depth interviews with both a family member and an occupational therapist from the care provider.
Slutsatser framkom från utvärderingen :
Facilitating Independent Communication
The primary aim of the test was to determine whether Loopeli could promote independent communication. This technology is designed to enhance safety, ease the dependence on care staff for communication, even for those facing cognitive challenges.
Relatives feel that residents can easily make and receive calls using Loopeli. This system allows service users to connect with family members whenever they want. Families appreciate communication flows smoothly. If one family member is busy, others can be reached and answer the call instead.
The care provider’s occupational therapist has noted Loopel has greatly improved communication abilities for the residents. Usually care staff help with calls by holding the phone and even at times participating in conversations. The phones used for calls are the same phone units used for call bell alarms, which can interrupt calls and cause un necessary stress for both residents and staff, when the alarms goes off and the phone starts buzzing and the call needs to be ended to allow staff attending to the call bell.
Loopeli allows residents to participate in family activities through video calls. Family members often call the resident during outings and other events, enabling them to join from a distance. Sometimes, the video call remains active while each person goes about their own activities, yet they still feel a sense of togetherness and shared everyday life. Additionally, the ability to send pictures, like postcards, for the resident to view on the tablet fosters a feeling of connection to daily life. Family members have mentioned that this helps reduce the emptiness that can come when a loved one suddenly becomes absent from their routine.
Being able to fall asleep with a peace of mind
They say that the resident sometimes calls in the evening or when he can’t sleep because he feels lonely and worried about his relatives. Through video calls, a sense of belonging and security is created. You don’t even have to talk, just see each other – it creates security and peace. This allows him to fall asleep knowing that someone is there for him.
Reduce anxiety and stress
Relatives say that the resident occasionally calls when he can’t find things, like the TV box or clothes, and feels stressed and worried. howeve, when using Loopeli, relatives can easily help and calm the resident’s anxiety and stress.
Relatives also mention that the resident can become worried and stressed when they have to go away or cannot visit. Thanks to Loopeli, they can stay in touch even when they are away or working, which helps alleviate the resident’s worries.
The occupational therapist notes that Loopeli has helped the staff better understand the resident’s feelings of anxiety and depression. The resident tend to hiding his emotions and doesn’t want to be burden, which resulted in him not speaking his mind when he felt upset. However, he expressed his feelings to his partner through Loopeli, which allowed the staff to become aware of his emotional state.
The occupational therapist believes that the calls via Loopeli have helped reduce the resident’s worries and anxiety because he can independently reach out to his family. Loopeli has the potential to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, providing the resident with a greater sense of security and comfort at home.
Protecting privacy
The relative says that with the help of Loopeli, she can communicate freely with her partner at the care home. He can now tell about everything he feels and worries about in everyday life.
The relative also says that in the past, when the staff attended the call, some things her partner said could be misinterpreted and create unnecessary negative reactions among the staff. Relatives say that in such a situation it becomes difficult to say what you want when more people (staff) are involved in the conversation. It is important to be allowed to be sad or complain without anyone else (the staff) hearing these conversations.
Reflections following the trial
Loopeli has witnessed the frustration experienced by families when the desire to communicate is present, but the ability to do so is limited.
In an effort to understand the challenges faced by elderly individuals when it comes to embracing new technology, particularly video calls, Loopeli conducted a trial in collaboration with a private care business. The trial involved testing the video call service on 15 service users and their families, who resided in different nursing homes and displayed varying levels of cognitive impairment.
The results of the trial were promising. Nearly 9 out of 10 families reported increased frequency of communication, expressing that the ability to see and interact with their loved ones resulted in more meaningful conversations and a stronger sense of connection. Additionally, 67% of participants found it easier to reach one another through video calls.
The trial also revealed that the elderly were able to initiate and receive calls independently, reducing their reliance on staff for support. An overwhelming 93% of families found the technology easy to use, even among individuals with cognitive impairment.
An impressive 52% of the 1264 calls made during the trial were initiated by the elderly themselves, highlighting their active desire for communication. The presence of more family members on an older person’s account correlated with an increase in the frequency of calls, with an average of 3.4 family members per account.
